Turns out there is a benefit to getting out of the gate quickly. Wes Skaggs, the head golf professional at Crystal Falls Golf Club in Leander, posted a first-round score of 5-under-par 67 on the Weiskopf Course at Montgomery’s Bentwater Country Club.
Skaggs held a one-shot lead over four golfers heading into the second round of the Southern Texas PGA’s 2007 Callaway Tradition Championship and that turned out to be the winning margin with the tournament’s second and final round was cancelled due to heavy rains that inundated the area.
Skaggs earned $3,000 for the victory. Austin’s John Wagner, Houston’s Steve Parker, Robert Thompson of Huntsville and Bryan’s Brad Lardon ended up in a second-place tie at 68, taking home $1,712.50 each.
Jim Dickson of The Woodlands won the tournament’s Senior Division, his second consecutive victory in a Southern Texas PGA event. Dickson, who won the Section’s Srixon Spring Classic in April, carded a 69 on the Bentwater course to finish two strokes up on Chuck Bishop of Helotes.
The win earned Dickson $1,750, while Bishop took home $1,250 as the runner-up. Bryan’s Bob Ellis and Chuck Westergard of San Antonio finished in a third-place tie at 73 and earned $725 each.
