Last week, the University of Texas Board of Regents held hearings on what to do with the "Brackenridge Tract," a parcel of land in Austin that includes the Lions Municipal Golf Course.
Golf writer Jim Apfelbaum (latest book: Golf Unplugged), longtime host of That's Golf! on AM-1300 in Austin, was at that meeting. Afterward, Jim interviewed Mary Arnold, whom he describes as "a longtime activist on behalf of Austin's parks and municipal golf courses - and one of those who spearheaded previous efforts to save Muny." ("Muny," by the way, is Austinites' shorthand for Lions Municipal, which gives you an indication of how beloved the course is.)
"It's reassuring to know (Mary is) engaged," Apfelbaum said, "but the tone of her
remarks is certainly disconcerting." He reported that Mary and other Austin golf insiders fear the UT Regents have already made a decision - one that will lead to the doom of Muny.
