If you want to support the growth of women's professional golf - and the continued presence of professional golf in the Valley - then head out to Palm View Golf Course in McAllen this weekend and check out the Futures Tour Jalapeno Classic.
This is one of two annual stops by the Futures Tour in Texas, the other coming next week in El Paso.
There are some good, up-and-coming players in the field. Such as Esther Choe, the 2006 AJGA Player of the Year who will likely, some day soon, be a presence on the LPGA Tour. And Vicky Hurst, the photogenic 18-year-old who was AJGA Player of the Year in 2007, and who has very big things in her future.
There are a spate of golfers we've come to know from their presence in Golf Channel series. There are Big Breakers Lori Atsedes, Rachel Bailey, Bridget Dwyer, Courtney Erdman, Christina Lecuyer, Ashley Prange, Sarah Lynn Sargent, Kristina Tucker, Bri Vega and Kim Welch. Plus Perry Swensen, from "Road Trip: Myrtle Beach," and Charlotte Campbell, who is featured in a new series debuting in July, a sort of "Amazing Race" involving golf.
And there are some notable Texas golfers there, too, of course: Kellee Booth, Christi Cano, Lauren Espinosa, Cindy Figg-Currier, Ashley Knoll and Catherine Matranga, among them.
Check out the tournament page on the Futures Tour Web site.
