Trent Leon Named National Amateur of the Month

trent leonCongratulations to Trent Leon of Dallas for being named National Amateur of the Month by the venerable Southern Golf Association. The 105-year-old SGA hands out the honor after a vote by a 15-person panel made up of golf officials, coaches and journalists.

Leon, a junior at Oklahoma State University, received the award for March after winning the U.S. Collegiate Championship in Alpharetta, Ga. Leon birdied five holes down the stretch for a 1-stroke victory over a field that included such college stars as Leon's OSU teammate Rickie Fowler and USC's Jamie Lovemark.

The SGA said in announcing the honor:

The U.S. Collegiate became the first individual college title for Leon, a junior from Dallas . His 54-hole total was 8-under-par 208. He followed that performance with a third-place showing in the Azalea Invitational a week later in Charleston , S.C.

Leon is part of the golf family that is the greatest Dallas dynasty since the Kuehnes. Brother Tyler was Trent's teammate at OSU before turning pro and is now playing on the Adams Pro Tour Series. Sister Taylor was an All-American at Georgia before turning pro. She has non-exempt status on the LPGA in 2008 and is playing on the Futures Tour.
