Dawie Van Der Walt, a South African who played collegiate golf at Lamar University and now calls Beaumont home, was the winner of the Adams Golf Pro Tour Series Mary Bird Perkins Merrill Lynch Open on Sunday. The tournament was played at The University Club at Baton Rouge, La.
Van Der Walt closed with a 65 to finish at 20-under 268, two strokes better than runner-up Connie Pierce of Oklahoma City.
Van Der Walt has played most of his events back home in South Africa on the Sunshine Tour in 2008, making seven of seven cuts with a high finish of ninth. This tournament was only his second on the Adams Tour this year, but in those two appearances he has this win and a previous fourth-place finish.
