West Texas Amateur Begins Friday

The 80th playing of the West Texas Amateur begins Friday at San Angelo Country Club and concludes on Sunday, July 20. The West Texas Amateur, conducted by the Texas Golf Association, will be 54 holes of stroke play in three division: Open, Senior (55 and older), and Super Senior (65 and older). The two senior division each crown their own champion, but the low scorer among all seniors (from both categories) earns the overall senior title.

The TGA reports:

An exceptionally strong field will be on hand for this year's event including past champions Conway Jordan (1997) and Trey Todd (2005), both of Abilene, and local resident Mickey Scott (1992). Other notable names scheduled to compete are current State Public Links champion Guy Goodspeed of Del Rio and 2007 TGA North Player of the Year Rob Couture of Dallas. In all, nearly half of the 108-players in the starting field sport a plus-handicap.

While play is in progress, scores will be available osn the Texas Golf Association Web site.
