Houston: Tom Doughtie of Amarillo turned 55 on July 22nd, making him eligible for his first Texas Senior Amateur Championship. He took advantage of the opportunity by winning the 2008 title, but it ended up being a narrow margin of victory. Leading by four shots with only three holes to play, Dougthie hit his tee shot in the water on the par three 16th hole. He ended up with a triple bogey and his lead was down to one. A birdie-bogey finish gave him a final round 75 for a 54-hole total of three over par – 219, just one shot ahead of runner-up Jim Mundell of San Angelo. Mumdell tied Doughtie for the low round of the tournament with a final round of three under par 69 to finish at 220. Six playera tied for third at 222.
In the Super Senior Division for players 65 and over, Joe Cadle of Wichita Falls came from four shots back to win by two. Cadle, a two time winner of the State Senior Amateur, claimed his first Super Senior title with a three day total of 229, two ahead of Joe Tippett of San Antonio and Johnny Jones of Temple.
Cadle's final round of one over par 73 tied Tippett for the low round of the championship in the Super Senior Division and allowed him to make up the four shot deficit.
After two long days for all of the players that involved several suspensions of play for weather, the final round at Royal Oaks Country Club in Houston was played under near perfect conditions. The heat and humidity are expected in August, but a gentle breeze and lower temperatures than the first two days, along with no thunderstorms, made things for Sunday’s final round much more enjoyable for everyone.
