After a 10-year run at South Padre Island Golf Club, Texas' premier senior championship is moving to The Clubs of Kingwood in Houston. The 2008 championship, now known as the Maker's Mark Texas Senior Open, will take place Nov. 18-21 on the Forest Course at The Clubs of Kingwood.
With the tournament's relocation to The Club’s of Kingwood course for 2008, Maker's Mark, a Kentucky distiller of premium bourbon whisky, has taken on the title sponsor role for the tournament.
The tournament is open to all professionals and amateurs with a U.S.G.A. Handicap Index of 9.0 or less who are aged 50 and above as of Nov. 19, 2008. Professionals will compete for cash prizes and amateurs for merchandise certificates.
Rick Karbowski of Frisco won the 2007 Texas Senior Open with a 54-hole total of 71-68-70—209, finishing 3 strokes up on 2006 champion Chuck Moran of Houston, who posted a 4-under-par total of 212. Karbowski earned $14,000 for the victory, while Moran took home a runner-up share of $10,000.
Richard Lapierre of San Antonio finished at 74-76-77—227 to earn low amateur honors for the second consecutive year, good for a merchandise certificate of $750.
Golfers who are not otherwise exempt from qualifying may gain access to the championship through competition in five 18-hole qualifying events (Oct. 21 on the Tournament Course at The Woodlands Country Club; Oct. 23 at Stonebridge Ranch Country Club in McKinney; Oct. 28 at Tangle Ridge Golf Club in Grand Prairie; Nov. 5 at The Onion Creek Club in Austin; and Nov. 16 in "Last Chance" qualifying on the host course at the Clubs of Kingwood).
The number of qualifiers from each of the first four qualifying events will be determined on a pro-rata basis depending upon the size of the field. The “Last Chance” qualifier, open to any previously unsuccessful qualifier and any eligible golfer missing the entry deadline, will produce a minimum of 10 qualifiers for the championship.
The deadline for entry into the first four qualifying events and the championship is Oct. 16, 2008. The deadline for entering the "Last Chance" qualifier is Nov. 14.
All entrants into the qualifying tournaments will pay an entry fee of $175, which includes green and cart fees and practice balls. Successful qualifiers will pay an additional $225 entry fee for the championship; all exempt players will pay a $400 entry fee.
A pro-am will precede the 2008 Maker’s Mark Texas Senior Open on the Forest Course at The Clubs of Kingwood on Tuesday, Nov. 18. Teams of one professional and four amateurs will compete in a two best balls (one gross and one net) format during the pro-am.
The first 15 professionals entering a team in the pro-am will receive exemptions into the championship field.
