Two of the needed points came from match four and match five with Mark Viskozki defeating David Pilsner 6 & 5 and Greg Antunes defeating Carl Baker 3 & 2. The clinching points came from Larry Bryan who halved his match with Ricky Arnett and Jim Stalder defeated Randy Jones 3 & 2. The team records were tied going into the matches with each team sharing a 13-13-1 overall record. The Northern Texas PGA now leads the matches with a 14-13-1 overall record.

The teams from each section were represented by their Section President, Senior Points Leader, top 9 PGA directors of golf and head golf professionals, and a Captain's Pick of a PGA director of golf or head golf professional. Ronny Glanton, head golf professional at Sherrill Park Golf Course in Richardson served as the Northern Texas PGA captain with Steve Bowman, teaching professional at the Matt Swanson School of Golf at Wildcat in Houston serving as the Southern Texas PGA captain.

The matches were contested at Crown Colony Country Club, a 6,692 yard, par 72 layout in Lufkin.

The Texas Joe Black Cup Matches is an annual competition between the Northern Texas PGA and the Southern Texas PGA Sections. The Ryder Cup style format features 12 golf professionals from each Section competing in Foursome and Four-Ball Matches the first day followed by Singles Matches the final day. The event was started in 1981 to honor Joe Black, a Snyder native who was completing his first year as President of The PGA of America. One point was awarded to a winning match and half a point awarded to any match tied after eighteen holes. The Northern Texas PGA needed 12.5 points to capture the cup while the Southern Texas PGA needed 12 points to retain the cup.
