SA's Connor Claims STPGA Senior Series Tourney

Former PGA Tour and Champions Tour player Frank Conner, playing in the Super Senior Division, was the overall winner of the Bridgestone STPGA Senior Series tournament at River Ridge Golf Club in Sealy.

Conner holds a couple interesting distinctions. In his college days at Trinity University in San Antonio, he was one of the top tennis players in the country, and he played in the U.S. Open tennis tournament. Later, he played in the U.S. Open golf tournament - making him one of only three athletes to play in both the golf and tennis U.S. Opens.

He also appears in the PGA Tour record books, having been part of one of the longest sudden-death playoffs in tour history (see here).

Frank Conner came back from a first-round 78 with a second-round 68 for a 2-under-par total of 140 for the overall and Super Senior Division titles in a Bridgestone STPGA Senior Series tournament at River Ridge Golf Club in Sealy.

Conner finished a stroke up on four golfers for the win, his third trip to the winner’s circle on the Bridgestone STPGA Senior Series circuit for 2009. Conner won the group’s first tournament of the year at La Toretta Del Lago Resort in Montgomery and tied for first place in the Super Senior Division in a July outing at River Crossing Golf Club in Spring Branch. The San Antonio professional has played in six Senior Series competitions this year, finishing in the top five of his division in all six. He earned $300 for the overall win at River Ridge and an additional $410 for the Super Senior Division victory; Conner has earned a total of $3,733.33 in Senior Series winnings for 2009.

Sherwood Stewart of The Woodlands finished in second place in the Super Senior Division at River Ridge, posting an even-par total of 72-70—142 for $330 in winnings. Jim Gittleman of San Antonio took third place at 74-72—146, earning $300, and Marty Fleckman of Cypress finished fourth, winning $250 for a score of 71-76—147.

The four golfers who finished just back of Conner in the overall competition tied for first place in the Senior Division of the River Ridge tournament. Ron Schroeder (66-75) of Montgomery, Houston’s Steve Parker (71-70), The Woodlands’ Troy Schleicher (70-71) and Billy Sitton (74-67) all finished at 1-under-par 141 and won $425 each. The River Ridge tournament marked first-time wins for Sitton and Parker, while Schroeder was recording his second top spot of the year and Schleicher was earning his fifth blue ribbon on the year.

Schleicher sits atop the 2009 Bridgestone STPGA Senior Series points list with just one tournament left to play, and has won a total of $4,145.50 in the seven tournaments in which he has played. Amateur Juan Salcedo of The Woodlands, who finished in fifth place at River Ridge with a score of 69-75—144, is in second place on the points list.

Ben Graves of Kingwood on the Veteran Division of the River Ridge tournament with a score of 73-72—145 for winnings of $330. Houston’s Al Flores finished second at 71-77—148. Graves and Flores took home $330 and $220, respectively.

The last tournament on the 2009 Bridgestone STPGA Senior Series schedule will take place Sept. 28-29 at Walden on Lake Conroe Country Club.
