Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo is trying to qualify to play in the PGA Tour HP Byron Nelson Classic. And he successfully made it through Step 1, advancing out of the "pre-qualifier."
Romo played the Hills Course at Stonebridge Ranch in McKinney, where 129 players competed to finish in the Top 23 (plus ties). The Top 23 gained entry into the "Monday qualifier" that takes place next, well, Monday, prior to the Nelson. Another 128 players were on Stonebridge's Day Course, with the Top 23 finishers there also advancing.
Romo carded an even-par 72, which got him in on the number. The next step is much, much tougher, however: Only four spots in the Nelson field are available at Monday qualifying, which will also include many more golfers with PGA Tour experience.
