Arlington, TX – Another spectacular day of golf at Tierra Verde Golf Club in the final round of the State Public Links Championship. The final 18-hole match was played this morning between 2-seed, Christopher Brown, and 29-seed, Joe Epperson. Overcast skies were welcomed by the players and spectators after enduring the first 3 days of sun and heat. With a stillness in the air and the untouched dew on the grass, a serene setting offered an overwhelming calm that allowed the players to find great focus in the match at hand.
Both players this morning offered some amazing golf in the battle for the championship. The players went after every flag and demonstrated some very aggressive play. On the par-5 second, Epperson went for the green in two. He came up just short of the green while Brown put his ball to 5 feet. Epperson left himself with a 6 foot putt uphill for his birdie and just missed left. Brown took advantage and sunk the birdie putt to go 1 up. Epperson was not willing to let that go on for too long as he won the 4th hole and sent the match back to All Square .
The 5th hole is where Brown took his lead to never look back. He went on to win 3 of the next five holes to go 4-under through 9. Epperson made one final attempt on the 13th with a birdie at the short par-5, but it proved not to be enough. The hole and match was conceded on the 17th hole after Epperson put his drive left into the hazard. The final result was Brown winning 3 & 1.
Brown’s comment was, "It was a fun tournament and I enjoy playing in Match Play. It is a mental roller-coaster you really have to fight." He stated that he really found his focus after being down 3 in his first match. In the quarterfinals he fought back as well when he was 3 down through the first 5 holes. He said, "I had to play within myself not make stupid mistakes after that." He considered Epperson a great opponent and complimented him on his determination and never quitting in the match.
Congratulations to Chris Brown, the 2010 State Public Links Champion.
