TGA State Mid-Am Results

From the Texas Golf Association:

Dallas, TX - The final match of the 2010 Mid-Amateur Match Play Championship presented by Liberty Mutual got off to an early start Sunday morning and it didn’t take long to decide the winner. Dallas Athletic Club hosted this year’s championship and provided a real test for the finalists. Although the players had perfect scoring conditions, nerves were evident from both players early on. John Bearrie and John Derrick squared off in the finals, each looking to win their first TGA state championship.

John Bearrie, of Arlington, wasted no time in taking control of the match. After some short game miscues from both players on the 1st hole, Bearrie was able to win the hole with a bogey. John Derrick really struggled early in the match and was quickly 2 down thanks to failed up and downs. After Bearrie made a downhill 10 foot birdie putt on the 3rd hole to go 3up the match seemed out of reach. Derrick was able to win the 7th hole with a par, but Bearrie quickly answered by winning next two holes to lead 5up at the turn.

John Derrick, of Waco, did not give up and tried his best to mount a comeback on the back 9. He nearly holed out for eagle from the 11th fairway and was able to cut Bearrie’s lead to 4up. After Bearrie plugged his second shot in the greenside bunker on the 12th hole and failed to get up and down, the match started to get interesting as the lead was now just 3up. One again John Bearrie answered the challenge and won the 13th hole with a par and pushed Derrick to the brink. On the 14th hole, Derrick was in trouble off the tee and left the door open for elimination. Bearrie calmly sank a 6 foot par putt to win the hole and earn an impressive 5 and 4 victory.

John Bearrie has long been thought of as one of the most talented amateurs in North Texas, but was unable to break through on the state level. Bearrie was the 2008 North Player of the Year, so he is no stranger to success. This is a very well deserved honor for John Bearrie, who has worked as hard as anyone to get to this point. Bearrie played outstanding golf all week, claiming the stroke play medalist honor as well of the championship. With his play, John Bearrie left no doubt that he was the best player in the field this week. The Texas Golf Association would like to thank both the presenting sponsor and host Dallas Athletic Club for all their help in supporting amateur golf and conducting a successful championship.
