Fort Worth Golfer First to Win TGA 'Triple Crown'

What is the Texas Golf Association's "Triple Crown?" It's the three individual majors staged by the TGA: the Texas Amateur, Mid-Amateur, and Senior Amateur. Prior to the weekend, no golfer had ever won all three of those tournament during his career. But now Fort Worth's John Grace has.

From the TGA:

Odessa, TX - The 2010 Texas Senior Amateur Championship has concluded in epic fashion and a worthy champion has been crowned. The Permian Basin Breeze held steady as did the champion of this year’s event. Odessa Country Club gave the players one last challenge with its strong wind gusts and firm greens. The 18th hole would ultimately decide the champions of both the divisions. It was a day for the history books when all said and done.

The leaders of the Senior Division stayed neck and neck and were unable to make much of a gap throughout the day. With a handful of players in tight contention it was anyone’s race. Reggie Howell was tied for the lead and was in the race until the wheels fell off and he gave back 4 strokes on the last four holes to finish even par for the tournament. Third place was taken by Chuck Palmer with a 2-under for the tournament. Timothy Carlton was determined to find victory on the back making some incredible shots. One to remember was his recovery shot on the par 4 12th. He hooked his drive left under a tree 200 yards from the green. He made a low running hook to end up within 2 feet of the hole leaving just a short tap-in birdie. He birdied holes 16 and 17 as well to become tied for the lead going into the 18th hole. A three putt ultimately was the undoing though and he finished in second place. The key to victory at Odessa CC was holding steady and being patient. Grace recorded 15 pars, one birdie and two bogies for his final round that allowed a 1-stroke victory over the field. The 2010 champion, John Grace, has become the first person to win all three individual majors of the Texas Golf Association. The Texas Amateur, Mid-Amateur, and Senior Amateur has never been obtained by one person and John Grace has found himself in a league of his own.

Don Anderson took the Super Senior title today in a tight race to the finish. Anderson made birdie on the 17th hole to put him within 1 stroke of the lead behind Bob Hullender. Hullender made a double bogey 5 on the par 3 18th and Anderson made a par resulting in a 1 stroke victory with a tournament total of 6 over par. Also tied for second with Hullender were Jerry Ransom and Andy Wall who finished at 7 over par.
